What's Complete?
Did you know that one wall of a building is stronger than the others and provides support for the entire building? It’s called the shear wall. It’s composed of braced panels (also known as shear panels) to counter the effects of lateral loads acting on a structure. Wind and earthquake loads are the most common loads braced wall lines are designed to counteract. Under several building codes, including the International Building Code (where it is called a braced wall line) and Uniform Building Code, all exterior wall lines in wood or steel frame construction must be braced. Depending on the size of the building some interior walls must be braced as well. In the Michaux House, the shear wall is on the south side of the building.
With the steel frame in place, masons are laying the block and beginning to install the insulation for the new building. Brick is even starting to appear on the east wall along the basement lines. Plumbing for the building has been installed in the floors, and earlier this month, the city disrupted Franklin Street traffic to install a new water line to the building. The main stairs are also under construction now, and electrical work is underway on the interior.
The Michaux House is starting to take shape and the foundation is firm.
