A new kind of mission

St. James’s is partnering with the Richmond-based World Pediatric Project (WPP) to help heal children from around the world. Founded in 2001 as the International Hospital for Children, the organization currently serves children in Belize, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras , St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Panama, and Guyana by regularly sending out teams of medical professional to these places. But when a child is in need of especially complex surgical care, WPP makes arrangements to transport them to regional facilities in the U.S. that are capable of providing the care they require. Many of these children and their families come to Richmond and stay for weeks or months as they undergo surgery and recovery. While the families are provided with accommodations, they are far away from home and need the support of a loving community. St. James’s Missions committee has decided to use a portion of its 2012 budget to sponsor a child to come to Richmond for much-needed surgery through WPP. A “mission team” of parishioners is needed to welcome the family and provide support during their stay this spring. If you are interested in building international relationships but may be unable to travel with one of the missions to Haiti, Honduras or the Sudan, this is a great opportunity to serve that can include your entire family.
