Children’s Ministry Roles for Volunteers

Combined 2 and 3 year olds

Volunteers for this ministry serve with a combined class of two and three year old pre-schoolers. A team of four of five share the roles of leading and assisting in lessons. Each volunteer is asked to be present approximately twice each month during the Sunday school program year.

Godly Play

A team of four or five storytellers and doorkeepers per class serve our 4/5 year old class, kindergarten class, and first grade class. Volunteers alternate being telling the story and and welcoming the children into the sacred space of the Godly Play classrooms. Volunteers are encouraged to be present twice each month during the Sunday school program year.

Growing in Faith

Volunteers are able to share a wide range of talents when serving in this ministry. Workshop leaders, shepherds, service coordinators, and materials volunteers engage with the second through fifth graders in Sunday school program. Shepherds are encouraged to be present in the classroom twice per month during the program year. Workshop leaders lead lessons in the classrooms and can participate in one lesson or several over the course of the Sunday school program year. Service coordinators and materials volunteers work behind the scenes approximately once each month during the program year.

Parent volunteers serve as caregivers to infants, toddlers, and pre-school children in the nursery each Sunday. All parents whose children spend time in the nursery are called to be a part of this ministry.

Children’s Chapel

The Children’s Chapel experience during the Family Eucharist is enhanced by adult volunteers who serve the children in the role of doorkeeper, one who invites them into the sacred space of Children’s Chapel.

Baptismal Banners

Each child who is baptized at St. James’s receives a handmade baptismal banner created by parish members. No artistic skill is required to be part of this ministry, only simple cutting and gluing are involved. Service in this ministry can be performed at home or at church.

Advent Fair

Volunteers can serve on this committee by selecting crafts and preparing materials in advance. Volunteers can also serve as guides to assist children and families with their crafts during the Advent Fair which will be held November 26, 2017.

Christmas Pageant

Volunteers can assist with costuming and chaperoning Sunday school children and youth during the dress rehearsal and the pageant. Volunteers can also assist with costumes, props, and lighting. December 17, 2017.

Vacation Bible School

VBS volunteers can serve in a variety of roles both leading up to and during the program. Volunteers can serve in planning, decorating, and materials procurement prior to VBS. The week of VBS volunteers can serve as shepherds and activities leaders. Youth volunteers are welcome and encouraged at VBS. Vacation Bible School will be June 18-22, 2018.
